Empowering Teen Mothers in Murambi: A Story of Hope and Progress

At Rubavu District, Rubavu Sector, in Murambi Cell, a group of 20 teen mothers has come together to create a brighter future for themselves and their children. Through a project focused on legal empowerment, these young women are not only learning about their rights but also taking practical steps to improve their lives.

Every week, the mothers contribute 500 Rwandan francs to a group savings fund, which they collect every Saturday. But these meetings are about more than just saving money. Before collecting their funds, the group gathers to discuss their rights as mothers, the rights of their children, and the challenges they face in their community. Together, they brainstorm solutions and support one another in overcoming these issues.

One of the project’s biggest successes has been educating the mothers about birth control and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH). Many of the women have now adopted birth control methods, giving them more control over their futures. Additionally, the project has introduced literacy classes, as 40% of the mothers cannot read or write. These classes are helping them gain essential skills that will open doors to new opportunities.

This initiative is more than just a project—it’s a movement. By empowering these young mothers with knowledge, resources, and a supportive community, they are building a foundation for a better life for themselves and their children. Their courage and determination are an inspiration to us all.
